The Queensland Government and Gold Coast City Council are in partnership to construct a $1.6 billion world class public transport system which stretches from Helensvale past Griffith University and the just opened University Hospital through
Southport on to Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach.

The G:Link Light Rail system will add enormous economic benefit to the city by providing the Gold Coast city with greater access to public transport for both residents and tourists. Stage 1 of the light rail system opened in July 2014 and commences from Griffith University at Southport and enters the Southport CBD precinct at Wardoo Street, and travels down Queen Street through the commercial heart of the Southport CBD. From there, the light rail crosses the Nerang River over a new bridge to the Surfers Paradise precinct and terminates on the Gold Coast Highway at Broadbeach adjacent to Pacific Fair Shopping Centre.

The proposed future light rail route to Helensvale will link with Stage 1 at Griffith University (Parklands Drive, Southport) and travel along Olsen Avenue to
Harbour Town Shopping centre, and then along Brisbane Road to Helensvale Rail Station which links to Brisbane. Further development will connect the light rail to
the Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta.
